"Yes, I do believe we will end up at war with those in the north!" Thompson insisted. "And, it will be because of folks like Worthington here!"

"Just a minute now, Thompson," Jed responded as the groans and grumbles died down. "I simply have no need of slaves as a man of the cloth. I care little for amassing a fortune on the backs of other men. The men (I've made free) who remain at River Oaks don't plan to cause any trouble among local slaves. They and I, we do understand that slavery has been an institution employed in the south longer than I've been alive!"

A few men chuckled and elbowed each other. Jed continued, loud enough for all to hear in the present company gathered among his collection of books. "Furthermore, despite being a farmer's son, I confess I am entirely without any inclination toward, or success in any regard, in the matter of agricultural pursuits. I was born to be a minister. I prefer to spend my time in prayer, studying great theologians, and pouring over the pages of Scripture. Gentlemen, I'm entirely dependent on the advice and expertise of a man I've hired to manage these aspects. A happier business manager I've ne'er seen-- since he has little fear of my interference."

The library erupted in laughter, unaware of a thirteen year old girl hiding in the recessed window seat; ready to defend her father from the likes of Riley. Riley and Thompson exchanged looks... They hung their heads in shame as they listened.

Riley was beginning to think of him (Jed Worthington) as nothing but a northern sympathizer - a clergyman who had been thrust into ownership of a nine hundred acre plantation. They doubted his ability to even retain River Oaks, more and more...

They had greatly underestimated the preacher's ability to endear himself to them. In addition, Jed had done his homework. He had discovered Riley's inclination and fondness for Olivia and learned of Thompson's love for horses.

Jed continued to talk amongst the gentlemen in his library and when he saw his chance, he raised his voice to be sure all could hear him clearly. There was a hush from all corners as everyone present turned their ears toward what this new and radical neighbor had to say. "Now horses... 'tis something I do know a little about. Who here would like to grow their stables and mine with a little friendly trading between neighbors? I've discovered some of the finest specimens I've ever laid eyes on in my dearly departed father-in-law's stalls..."

Thompson stepped forward to take the bait. This sparked a great alliance and the two eventually doubled their stables on a handshake; without ever exchanging so much as a coin...
